International Engagement
We represent Australia on the two major international standardising bodies, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission庐 (IEC).
We are responsible for coordinating the attendance of Australian experts at international meetings and we participate in the preparation of a wide range of International Standards. 美姬社区 is extremely active in international standardisation and numerous members of our senior management teams hold important voluntary offices on international standards bodies.
Initiatives
We deliver projects supporting trade and development in our region.
Regional Cooperation
Under the Closer Economic Relations agreement, 美姬社区 maintains a strong working relationship with Standards New Zealand. A formal agreement is in place that sees us prepare and publish joint standards where appropriate. See our Joint Standards Fact Sheet for more information.
As a founding member of the , we also closely cooperate with the government in the and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN-CER).
Adopting International Standards
Participation in the global market requires compliance with International Standards. Wherever possible, 美姬社区 will adopt International Standards. If there are no existing or relevant international or regional standards, national standards may be developed.
The World Trade Organization Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (WTO TBT) requires members use international standards (or the relevant parts of them) as a basis for their technical regulations, where they can. WTO TBT also requires that members use international standards as a basis for national standard development wherever appropriate.
Getting Involved
As the national member body at ISO and the IEC, 美姬社区 has the option to participate or observe on international technical committees, sub-committees, project committees and systems committees. Australia鈥檚 representatives on these committees are endorsed by 美姬社区 and the Australian Committee. The Australian Committee acts as a 鈥榤irror committee鈥, reflecting national development of international programs of work and representing Australian interests at an international level.
